The Night Alive

The Night AliveRochester Community Players continues its 98th season with a spring production from its Irish program: Conor McPherson’s award-winning drama, The Night Alive, directed by Jean Gordon Ryon.

Set in one room of a subdivided Edwardian house in Dublin, the five characters in The Night Alive are all living on the margins of society but each has different issues to overcome as well as the potential for redemption. According to director Jean Gordon Ryon, “This is a complex drama that can be moving and sad, but also very funny as well as a bit mysterious.”

StageAgent.com describes the play as one that “flutters between the dramatic and comedic realms” and “explores the lives of a few lost souls…and a chance connection that may change their lives.” From The Guardian comes another assessment: “This is a play that quietly celebrates the unassuming heroisms of everyday life and the corrosive pain of loneliness.”

After its 2013 premier in London, The Night Alive won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play in 2014. Accolades from reviewers included: “Extraordinary! The play can only be called transcendent” (The New York Times); “Spellbinding and gorgeous….” (Time Out New York); and “A captivating play! Jolting drama with visceral energy…” (The Hollywood Reporter).
