Synopsis
The Playboy of the Western World is John Millington Synge’s classic comic masterpiece, written in 1907. In a sleepy town on the west coast of Ireland, a bashful young stranger wanders into a pub, claiming he has just killed his father with a spade. Instead of condemning the murderer, the locals greet the man like a rock star, and he starts to develop a personality to match. Things go well until….
About the Play
The Playboy of the Western World had its first performance at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1907, and it provoked riots because of its unflattering depiction of the Irish national character. Despite its tumultuous premiere, the play is now considered Synge’s masterpiece, and an example of the finest in Irish literature. The play is famous not only for its hilarious story, but also for the beauty of its language. The Playboy of the Western World is as funny and relatable today as it was at the turn of the 20th century —maybe more so.
Rochester Community Players: Irish Program returns after a hiatus of two years. This production of The Playboy of the Western World was in rehearsal in March of 2020 when all theatrical activity shut down. This is their first public performance since that time.
The production will be dedicated to Ed McGee, an original cast member who passed away on April 4, 2020, an early Rochester victim of COVID-19.
